Mesothelioma - Asbestosis - Lung Cancer - Pleural Disease

Asbestos related disease is the name given to a group of disorders caused by inhalation of microscopic asbestos fibres which lodge in the lungs. The most common conditions in the UK, caused by inhalation of asbestos are malignant lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma and pleural disease although there are a number of other lesser known illnesses that are also considered to be asbestos related diseases :-

  • Mesothelioma

This serious condition is sometimes referred to as asbestos cancer and it is a cancer of the mesothelium which is the membrane that covers and protects the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma is most often present in the pleura that line the lungs, in the peritoneum that lines the abdomen and in the pericardium which lines the heart. The early symptoms of mesothelioma are non specific which sometimes delays diagnosis however the mesothelioma patient usually presents with shortage of breath, chest pain and a persistent cough. Once diagnosed the prognosis for mesothelioma is poor with little effective help available and an average UK life expectancy in the region of 18 months.

  • Lung Cancer

Although lung cancer is usually associated with smoking cigarettes, there are many non smokers who succumb to this illness. The unfortunate fact is that whilst this condition is associated with asbestos in non smokers, the incidence of malignant lung cancer in smokers who are also exposed to asbestos is many times higher. The combination of smoking and inhalation of asbestos fibres put workers at extremely high risk of developing malignant lung cancer.

  • Asbestosis

Pneumoconiosis and silicosis suffered by miners and foundry workers are similar to asbestosis which is caused when asbestos fibres lodge in the lungs blocking the oxygen exchange areas. The result of this is that the victim becomes breathless which may in due course result in respiratory failure and death.

  • Pleural Disease

The microscopic fibres of asbestos consist of a long crystalline structure made of silicate which is a hard and tough mineral. The fibres become lodged in the lungs following inhalation and thereafter start to cut and damage the immediate area of each particle which results in a build up of scar tissue. These damaged tissue areas can be isolated, which is known as pleural plaques or may be widespread which is known as diffuse pleural thickening. This condition alone is not life threatening but it is indicative of high levels of asbestos inhalation which might in due course lead to a more serious asbestos related disease. UK law does not allow for compensation claims for pleural plaques due to the fact that it is without symptoms although we are able to offer help to those with symptoms as a result of diffuse pleural thickening.
